National Botanical Garden of Wales Greenhouse
The centre piece of the Garden, which opened in
May 2000 is a spectacular oval glass greenhouse designed by Norman
Foster. This greenhouse covers a third of the site and is 100 metres
long and 60 metres wide - the largest single-span glasshouse in the
world. The interior includes ravines, rock faces, waterfalls and bridges
and the structure is embedded into the surrounding Welsh hillside.
The management group immediately saw a requirement
for an environmentally sustainable energy system and their visionary
ability enabled them to perceive the advantages and symbiotic use of
biomass as a heating fuel to the project.

Tony Redman of Bioenergy
Technology Ltd. worked with the project over a 24 month
period to find the best technological solution.
The plant has been successfully in operation for
more than 12 months. During this period, oil prices have dramatically
increased. The project is now a commercial opportunity to reduce running
costs for the site, whilst still meeting the associated needs of the
community in terms of the environment and rural employment.
